"Good little computer for travel" 2009-06-28
By S. Sentell (USA)
We just took this computer on a trip (which is the main reason we bought it). It was a good size to toss in the backpack. Like that it was a solid state drive that will hopefully handle rougher treatment. Also like that it is running Linux and may have less to worry about logging on to all those public networks. It was a good value too!

 "What a gem" 2009-06-27

This was an experiment that worked out great.

This little unit can do most anything my larger laptop can do and I don't have to worry about taking the power cord (unless I go out of town). I got the unit with the 20GB SSD instead of the spinning disk. Removed linux and installed XP with openoffice.

The PRO's are obvious:

lite weight

long battery life (turn off the wireless and camera when not in use)

speed (go for the extra RAM - only $24)

wireless n

1.3MP camera

price

CON's:

Keyboard is smaller and takes more attention

no CDROM (get an external)

would like to have seen 2 SD slots, one is nice but 2 would have been better.

smaller screen - takes more attention

 "Nice but..." 2009-06-23
By Phil (Washington, DC USA)
I got this Eee PC 901 Linux about 4 weeks ago. It was really light weight, had super fast booting speed. Internet and other pre installed programs worked great. However, I realized that it was impossible to install any softwares or even fonts because of this customized Xandros OS. As a linux newbie it was a huge wall. I checked websites and followed numerous instructions to change the preset OS mode to the normal mode but none of the instructions actually worked. Customer service call wouldn't help me either. I had to return the product last week. I would buy this product again Only IF it comes with genuine Xandros or Ubuntu...

"Great hardware, better with Ubuntu Netbook remix installed" 2009-06-22
By Benjamin W. Matteson (Texas)
I love this Netbook. This was a good purchase. I wasn't happy with the specific Linux distro that came with it: the / file system was nearly full when I got it, and couldn't install any apps or update any of them. The install/update tool on the installed distro is horrible. I installed Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead, and that was the best move I've ever made. Netbook Remix looks great and though I prefer Fedora on a desktop machine, this Netbook Remix is perfect for this Netbook.

 "Wonderful tool" 2009-06-20
By E. Newberg (Seattle, WA USA)
I've had my Asus Eee PC 901 for two months now and I adore it. The first one had a problem with the hard drive, but the Amazon exchange process went extremely smooth (far better than my experiences with CompUSA).

I would not trade the smaller size of the 901 for the larger sized 8.9" Acer or HP, although the larger keyboards are nice. And I definitely would not buy the larger and heavier new 10.1" Asus. To me, a netbook MUST be under 3 pounds (around 2.5 pounds or less is ideal) and have at least 5-6 hours of battery life. The 901 is the perfect size to slip in my purse (I LOVE having my purse as a laptop case) and go anywhere. I use it when traveling, waiting at the doctor's office, or just sitting in bed, where I hook the Eee PC to an external drive that has all my working files.

I have an old Palm TX that I still love for reading e-books and quickly checking email (far more versatile than the Kindle). But even though I bought an external keyboard, it's way too small to work on comfortably. The Eee PC, on the other hand, is a perfect companion to my desktop pc. It took less than 20 minutes to adapt to the keyboard, and the screen is easy to read, even outside (as long as you are not in direct sunlight).

As far as operating systems - I kept the default Xandros for the first month, but Asus' upgrade process maxed out the small drive. I tested Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Remix on an 8 Gig SDHC card, and with a small tweak to get the sound working right, I was ready to go. But then I realized that there was no Linux alternative for the charting software I needed for work, and the program didn't work under WINE. So I installed XP on the 4 Gig drive (with program files on the larger drive) and kept Jaunty on the SD card. They both take about the same amount of time to boot.
