For me, Asus has defined the netbook computer genre. Their offerings are eminently affordable, yet never feel cheap. The construction is extremely solid, and the little computers are very durable. The expression "getting enough bang for your buck" comes to mind constantly.
I cannot overstate the difference that the new chiclet keyboard makes. I previously owned a 904HA model, which shares the 10" chassis, but has a smaller screen. The keyboard on that machine was very difficult to type on, particularly with the horrible placement of the right shift key. Asus listened, and now that key is perfectly situated. The chiclet keyboard has just enough key travel, and the feel is wonderful. Touch typing is an absolute pleasure now.
My criticisms are few and few in between. Essentially, I would like to have seen function keys at the top of the keyboard pre-programmed to mute, raise and lower volume. I have this capability in my Thinkpad, and it comes in very handy. The silver keys at the top of the 1000HA keyboard can be programmed for different functions, but its something I'd rather come standard with the machine.

I was intrigued by the statement I read somewhere, that netbooks are changing us from a society that strives for a computer for every person to one that aims at TWO computers for every person!
As a one-and-only computer, any netbook will show limitations, like the hard-to-swallow absence of any CD or DVD reader. But as a second computer, the Asus 1000HA is magnificent.
For not too much money (as computers go)you get a real computer that you can easily carry with you for experiments or for travel. I had a chance to take mine to Italy for 2 months, and it was wonderful!
But why this one? For one thing, it's simple to upgrade the RAM. You can easily replace the supplied 1GB memory module by a 2GB module (higher than that? I'm told it's done, but only by daring souls). On Youtube you'll even find movies.
A nice feature is the so-called Smart-Pad, which in addition to moving the cursor can perform useful functions. There's a reference on-line, and here's how to find it. EITHER in the notification area double-click the Elantech icon OR in the control panel's mouse properties click on the Elantech tab, then on the Options button. The "manual" has on the left icons for the various functions, and on the right their explanations. For example, by clicking on "Magnifying Glass" we find out about the easy way to magnify a portion of the screen, really handy in a netbook.

I have had the 1000HA for almost a month now, and am very happy with my purchase. I put Ubuntu on it almost immediately as I don't much care for Windows. Like many others, I don't find the battery life to be as long as advertised (I keep meaning to test it without the wireless, but gee, how often do you use a netbook without wifi!) Besides that, I find the keyboard to be a bit more springy than I had hoped for (the keys themselves are fine, but the whole surface flexes under pressure) and also the keyboard surface gets warmer than I'd like. (I think I read somewhere it is intentionally used as a heat sink, though I'm not positive about that.) I don't find it uncomfortable, just not ideal. It seems warmer while connected to AC power, which makes sense. But it's still a nice keyboard, which, along with the low price, was my main reason for purchasing. I don't have any complaints about the screen or the processor. While not a speed demon, it's not too shabby compared with my four year old desktop.

We are very happy with this notebook. It has been extremely easy to use. The keyboard is easy and internet access is easy. We bought it to accomodate small spaces on airplanes while writing, so looking forward to flying with it. It's so much lighter and easier to carry than a standard laptop. Great for travel. We also were able to purchase it much cheaper on Amazon, since the local electronics stores seemed to be out of the ones we wanted.

There has been a lot of positive reviews on this computer. There is really nothing to add. It has worked as advertised. Again as others have said the right SHIFT key is a little small but I am a two finger typer anyway so no problem. Before this I had the ASUS 9 inch with the soild state hd. I figured that would be more rugged. It was very slow and died after about 4 months. I am not nice to laptops. I use mine in small boats and they get banged around. This one is holding up well. The long battery life is nice. I'm getting about 6hrs out of the 6600 mAh battery. This is running two moving map programs a and blue tooth gps. For the price this computer is a real deal.
