"fatal flaw in this ASUS keyboard" 2009-07-07
By Irl D. Cramer (California)
Beware. Anything good in this machine is counterbalanced by a truly terrible element of the keyboard design. You'll notice that the up arrow key is just below the

enter key. On most keyboards, the shift key is below the enter key so if you miss, nothing bad happens. On this machine, it was fairly often the case that when I tried for enter, I got the up arrow and it threw me into a different part of the document. It was unbearable. I had to return it to Amazon.

"Better performance than you might expect" 2009-03-21
By P. Kettle (Portland, OR)
This netbook has exceeded my expectations. I read reviews comparing most of the current 10" netbook offerings before deciding on this one and I have not been disappointed. If you're concerned about the keyboard size, it's about 85% the size of a standard notebook keyboard - very easy to get used to. Go down to your local Best Buy or Costco and take a look at their floor models. What I wasn't expecting was the performance to be as good as it is. I download a lot of videos for play back on my LCD TV and the image is as sharp and smooth as it is with my Toshiba Centrino notebook. I did buy the 2GB memory upgrade, but performance was fine with the standard 1GB. Mine came with a 4 cell battery, which is good for 3.5-4hours. Purchased an after-market 8 cell off eBay and now can get 7.5-8 hours.

One final note: Open Office is compatible with and as easy to use as the MS Office suite. It's also free (donations accepted)

 "Shift this" 2008-12-12
By M&J (Maryland)
This is a nearly perfect replacement laptop.

I picked this up for a friend and nearly kept it for myself. I'd rather run something other than the OS that is on it, but for most people XP Home edition is perfectly fine. In fact many prefer its familiarity and efficiency over Vista Home edition.

There are three minor issues:

1) the reduced size keyboard means a shift key is in an odd spot

2) the touchpad proximity means that you'll want to use a mouse most often and disable the touchpad

3) the reduced height screen makes some applications a little difficult to use

But these are really minor issues when you consider how inexpensive the PC 1000H is and how lightweight it is. Not too long ago you could pay a very high premium for a laptop that weighs just two pounds.

The battery life and performance are excellent. You might think that you are only going to get a couple of hours from such a small unit but it will run all day on one charge.

"You can not wait forever!" 2008-12-12
By Yuhong Cao (New York, NY)
I paid for $450 three month ago, since I really need it for working in airplane for cross country flight (my Dell D630 is still too big and last only three hours with a $400 9-cell battery). The battery last the whole flight, and it does what I need to do. My child use it when I am not traveling. She complained about missing the DVD rom. But I have heard the Samsung one has a longer battery life and cheaper. It is hard to compare, since I never use it.

"Exactly what the Doctor ordered!" 2008-11-23
By D. Wei
This little netbook is amazing! My original thought was to upgrade it to 2GB of RAM, and I may still do it, but it hasn't proven necessary; this running Office and stock analysis software. Even if the person in front of me on the plane has their seat back down, it's comfy to use. Touch typing is no problem. There's only one minor concern -- the up-arrow and the right-shift are in the wrong place, but you can remap the keyboard.
